Savings Advice

Stick with your shop for the starter; get a second quote for alternator.

A 2018 Toyota Corolla driver in Seattle used Service Buddy to review a $1,495 repair quote covering starter and alternator replacements. Service Buddy confirmed the $425 starter price was fair but flagged the $1,070 alternator charge as higher than typical local rates. By recommending a second estimate for the alternator, Service Buddy helped the driver identify potential savings and avoid overpaying on the repair.

Detailed Analysis

Starter Replacement ($425):
This is right in the fair range ($397–$551). No surprise charges here. If you have starting issues, this quote is reasonable. No obvious upsell.

Alternator Replacement ($1,070):
This is at the very top, or even a bit higher than the usual cost range for a Corolla ($400–$1,000+). Unless you’re getting dealer-only parts/labor or there’s something odd about the job, that feels pricey for an alternator. No sign this is an upsell—alternators are a real repair, not a bolt-on—but I would definitely shop around for a second quote at reputable local independent shops. Odds are, you can find it for less.

Upsells:

Neither job is a common upsell tactic (like filters, fluid flushes, wipers). Both are legitimate repairs if diagnosed correctly.
